The ICO will introduce measures in April 2010 to fine organisations up to £500,000 for mishandling data, so now that the watchdogs have teeth, I'd expect to see a quick and widespread uptake.

How it Works
Similis fingerprinting software reliably matches exact images or images that have been altered in some way, for example to escape detection. High accuracy levels are achieved in matching images changed to black and white or negative or images altered by colour change, resizing, rotation, addition of text, flipping, mirroring or cropping. An ideal forensic solution to achieve what MD5# techniques are unable to achieve. Using large output sources such as existing databases and content-sharing web based utilities, Similis is able to accurately identify images which have similar content and characteristics.
The integration of Similis into security applications provides development partners with significantly enhanced forensic matching capabilities, offering customers the ability to detect unauthorised, illegal, illicit, offensive or unwanted content.
The huge growth in user-generated content websites provides content owners with a major logistical challenge to manage copyright infringement or inappropriate content. Similis combined with Fortium's Harvester scanning software provides an effective solution to combat this.
Similis Image and Video software is designed to handle common image and video formats which involve different file handling protocols. Similis video ingests video frames at a speed of up to 40 times faster than real time to create a fingerprint for subsequent matching of scanned files. This means a one hour video could be ingested in just over one minute. The size of the fingerprint depends on the size of the file but on average this would be 24KBs which avoids latency in look ups that can be typical of database solutions. The matching of video files against the fingerprint is fast and averages at speeds 20 times faster than real time. Accuracy in correctly identifying video content is higher than image fingerprinting as there are more images within the frames to match. Typically snippets of a video lasting only 20 seconds can be successfully matched against original files. Extensive independent testing confirms high accuracy levels, details of which can be provided upon request.
