Raids in Lilydale and Balwyn North uncover pirated DVDs

Source:Lilydale & Yarra Valle Date:Tuesday, 1 June 2010. Article Type:General

POLICE raids in Lilydale and Balwyn North have led to the seizure of more than 2000 illegal DVDs.

Croydon police and investigators from the Australian Federation Against Copyright Theft (AFACT) raided a business address in Lilydale on Friday, May 28.

That raid led them to a Balwyn North home where they seized more than 2000 DVDs, including copies of cinema releases Robin Hood and Clash of the Titans.

A man in his 40s was also arrested.

AFACT executive director Neil Gane commended the successful raid.

“The result puts a stop to the flood of illegal DVD movies being distributed throughout the community to the detriment of genuine businesses such as local cinemas and DVD stores,” Mr Gane said.

“They deserve a fair go and should not have to compete with theft.”

Last year, state and federal police conducted 69 raids involving movie piracy and seized almost 195,000 pirated DVDs.
